Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a safe, effective, and painless way to help prevent plaque build up, tooth decay, and cavities in children.
Dental Sealants For Kids
A dental sealant is a thin, clear coating that is applied to the back teeth (molars) that helps prevent tooth decay. Sealants are a preventative treatment that lower the chances of developing cavities in the deep chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Since these grooves, pits, and fissures are narrow and difficult to clean with a toothbrush, especially for children whose motor skills aren’t yet developed, they’re some of the areas that develop cavities first.
By placing sealants over chewing surfaces, we essentially create a shallower area that’s smoother and easier to clean with a toothbrush. That way there’s little to no residual bacteria left inside of the grooves following your typical brushing routine.

What are dental sealants for kids?
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth — the molars and premolars. These surfaces have deep grooves and pits that trap food and bacteria, making them especially prone to cavities. Sealants seal off those grooves, creating a smooth surface that’s much easier to clean and far less likely to develop tooth decay. They’re one of the most effective preventive treatments in pediatric dentistry.
-
Are dental sealants safe for children?
Yes. Dental sealants have been used safely for decades and are recommended by both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. They’re made from a safe resin material that bonds directly to the tooth surface — no drilling, no removal of healthy tooth structure, and no pain.
-
What does getting dental sealants involve?
The sealant application process is quick, comfortable, and typically takes just a few minutes per tooth. We clean and dry the tooth, apply a mild bonding solution, rinse, dry again, then paint the sealant onto the chewing surface where it hardens — sometimes with a curing light. There’s no recovery time; your child can eat and drink normally right after the appointment.
-
How long do dental sealants last?
With proper care, dental sealants can last up to 10 years. We check them at every regular checkup to make sure they’re still fully intact and can reapply them if any chips or wear occur. Combined with brushing, flossing, fluoride, and regular cleanings, sealants are one of the best tools available for preventing cavities in kids and teens.

At what age should kids get dental sealants?
Dental sealants are most beneficial as soon as the permanent molars come in — typically around ages 6 and 12. They can also be applied to baby teeth with especially deep grooves when needed. Our pediatric dentists will evaluate your child’s teeth at their checkup and let you know if sealants are a good preventive option for them.
