Pediatric Dentistry

Serving Lakewood, Aurora, Centennial, Denver & Thornton, CO

Taking care of teeth is one important aspect of keeping yourself healthy. Dentists will always share the same basic advice for maintaining your teeth’s excellent health and appearance: Brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent tooth decay, pay a visit to your dentist at least twice a year, avoid using your teeth for opening or tearing things, steer clear of foods and beverages that can cause stains. Can you see we have a passion for healthy teeth?

Dental care for children, however, will be relatively different. Your trusted family dentist can explain how extra assistance and attention are required in looking after your kids’ teeth. Visiting the dental clinic — not to mention having to sit still in a chair while someone peers inside their mouth and uses different tools — can be a strange and even frightening experience for them, so it helps to find a professional who can expertly meet the needs of your whole family.

A trained and highly skilled dentist knows exactly how to put young patients at ease and make each visit to the clinic a positive one.

  • What is pediatric dentistry and how is it different from general dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a dental specialty focused entirely on the oral health of infants, children, and teenagers. Pediatric dentists complete two to three years of additional training beyond dental school covering child development, behavior management, and treating kids with special health care needs. At Grin, our offices are designed with children in mind — from the friendly environment to how our team communicates — so every visit feels comfortable and positive rather than stressful.

  • When should my child first see a pediatric dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit within six months of their first tooth appearing, and no later than their first birthday. Starting pediatric dental care early lets us monitor development, catch potential concerns before they become problems, and help build healthy oral hygiene habits that last a lifetime.

  • How do pediatric dentists help kids who are scared of the dentist?

Our team is specially trained in child-friendly techniques to help anxious kids feel at ease. We use simple, age-appropriate language to explain what’s happening, move at a comfortable pace, and offer options like nitrous oxide for children who need extra support. Our goal with every visit is to build trust so that going to the dentist becomes something your child feels confident about — not something they dread.

  • What are the most common dental problems in children?

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood condition in the United States, but pediatric dentists also routinely treat gum issues, delayed or abnormal tooth eruption, misaligned bites, and dental injuries from falls or sports. Regular dental checkups every six months are the most effective way to catch and address these issues early, before they require more extensive treatment.

  • Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. Digital dental X-rays — which we use at all Grin locations — expose children to significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and the amount is very small. X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool that allow us to see decay between teeth, check developing permanent teeth, and spot issues that aren’t visible during a standard exam. We follow American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines and only take X-rays when clinically appropriate for your child’s age and risk level.
